Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are characterized by deficits in communication and social interaction, as nicely as the presence of repetitive and stereotyped behavior. These core attributes are most likely to influence interactions in between persons with ASD and others, such as law enforcement officers. If police officers are unfamiliar with ASD, they could misinterpret such behaviors as suspicious, noncompliant, or threatening. Additionally, such misinterpretations could in some circumstances result in unnecessary injury or fatality. For this purpose, CARD researchers Jill Teagardin, Dr. Dennis Dixon, Marlena Smith, and Dr. Doreen Granpeesheh are conducting a study to train police officers to determine and adequately respond to persons with ASD.
Participants will contain approximately 80 police officers from the Ventura County Law Enforcement Department. The participants will be randomly assigned to one of two groups: experimental or manage. Due to the essential content material of the instruction, each groups will receive intervention yet, the manage group will receive instruction following a slight delay. The participants expertise of ASD will be evaluated via a questionnaire completed each prior to and following instruction.
The participants will receive instruction on ASD as component of their regular instruction sessions. Instruction will consist of the participants viewing a 13 minute long educational video created specifically for police officers. The video covers topics such as how to recognize, communicate with, and safely respond to persons with ASD.
With the elevated rate of ASD diagnoses, interactions in between persons with ASD and law enforcement are most likely to boost as nicely. Additionally, the current prevalence of media coverage reporting unsuccessful interactions in between law enforcement officers and persons with ASD suggests a want for police instruction. In spite of this, research exploring practical and successful procedures to teach police officers about ASD is notably lacking. Therefore in this study, CARD sets out to evaluate one approach of police instruction on the topic of ASD.
